Dr. Karolin Rockson
PT (BPT), Ex. CMC - Vellore. Neuro-rehabilitation specialist focused on measurable functional recovery.
Drop foot (also called foot drop) is the inability to lift the front part of the foot due to weakness or paralysis of the muscles that dorsiflex the ankle — primarily controlled by the peroneal nerve and the L4/L5 nerve roots. This causes the foot to drag or "drop" during walking, forcing compensatory strategies such as hip hiking, circumduction, or high-stepping to clear the ground. Drop foot significantly increases fall risk, impairs walking efficiency, and causes profound activity limitation. The causes include stroke (most common), peroneal nerve injury at the fibular head (from prolonged squatting or leg crossing), lumbar disc herniation at L4/L5, and peripheral neuropathy. At Bethesda Physio & Rehab Clinic, treatment includes functional electrical stimulation (FES) as an orthotic and rehabilitative tool, ankle-foot orthoses (AFO) for safe ambulation, peroneal strengthening exercises, gait retraining, and neural mobilisation for nerve-related causes.
A thorough clinical evaluation is advised. These symptoms are typical of progressive neurological or musculoskeletal conditions. Early diagnosis and targeted physiotherapy prevent complications and accelerate recovery.
Seek urgent physiotherapy assessment for drop foot following stroke or neurological event — early FES and rehabilitation significantly improve recovery. Also seek urgent medical evaluation if drop foot develops suddenly without obvious cause, as this may indicate a new spinal or neurological problem requiring investigation.
A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients. This often results in paralysis or weakness on one side of the body (hemiplegia). Our specialized neuroplasticity-focused rehabilitation leverages repetitive task training, robotic gait assist, and neuromuscular stimulation to rebuild brain-muscle connections.
Spinal Cord Injury is a significant clinical presentation classified under Musculoskeletal Conditions. Our rehabilitation program utilizes evidence-based clinical protocols, muscle re-education, and manual therapy to target the root dysfunction, reduce persistent symptoms, and restore your movement independence.
Peripheral neuropathy refers to damage or dysfunction of the peripheral nerves that transmit signals between the central nervous system and the rest of the body. It produces a characteristic combination of numbness, tingling (paraesthesia), burning pain, and weakness, typically beginning in the hands and feet ('stocking-glove' distribution). Diabetic peripheral neuropathy is the most common form, but causes include chemotherapy, vitamin deficiencies, autoimmune diseases, and alcohol overuse. Physiotherapy plays a vital role in managing peripheral neuropathy by improving balance and preventing falls, strengthening weakened muscles, desensitizing painful areas through graded sensory exposure, and teaching compensatory strategies. At Bethesda Physio & Rehab Clinic, our neuropathy program incorporates sensory retraining, balance rehabilitation, and progressive strengthening tailored to each patient's neuropathy type and severity.
Follow these conservative self-care steps while coordinating clinical review. Do not perform any activity that triggers sharp or radiating pain.
Use an ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) when walking to prevent trips and falls
Perform ankle dorsiflexion exercises: 20 repetitions, 3 times daily
Avoid walking in socks on smooth floors — ensure secure footwear
Fit footwear that accommodates the AFO and provides ankle support
Practice high-stepping gait pattern awareness to safely clear the floor
